FAQs

Why would I hire an accountant to do my taxes?

While you are free to handle your own taxes, there are many good reasons people choose an accountant to help them. Below are some reasons why you may want to hire an accountant to handle your taxes.

  • You have a busy life and may not have the time. Whether you are busy with multiple jobs or have a tight schedule from your family’s hobbies and events, not everyone has the time to sit down, sort through piles of paperwork, and submit their own taxes. A tax professional generally handles your taxes much faster than you can.
  • Your tax situation might be unique or complicated. Depending on your family, job, income, and living situation, filing your own taxes could be far more complicated than the average person. Owning a business, working freelance, or having many investments can complicate your tax situation. It’s better to hire a professional who knows the latest rules around proper tax filing.
  • You might just want to forget about taxes. Unfortunately, taxes are an essential part of life. You might want someone else to handle it for you with minimal involvement.

Can I file a tax extension?

Whether you can file a tax extension depends on your unique situation. Not everyone is eligible to file for an extension. A tax extension is not a way to delay you needing to pay your taxes.

Please contact your own accountant or find an accountant to assist you if you are unsure of your eligibility.

Should I review or change my W-4?

You do not need to change your W-4, but you should regularly review it with your employer to ensure it is correct and deducting the way you want it to.

In the case your W-4 is inaccurate or you have changes in your life, you should change the form to withhold differently. Depending on your circumstances, you may want to withhold as close to the required amount the IRS will ask of you, or you may want to overestimate and receive a refund each tax season.

My 1099-B says figures not final, what does this mean?

You may have received a 1099-B in January or February that has figures not final on it. This just means the final 1099-B is still being calculated. Your broker or firm should have a final version ready by March 15th, so contact them if you haven’t received it by then.
