Protect Your Financial Information from Weather Disasters

We never know when bad weather is going to strike, but it’s always best to be prepared! Yes, you want to make sure you have bottled water, batteries and flashlights, but you also what to have your important financial information and family documents as well. There are a few ways to protect those files.

1. Store copies of the important documents in either a safety deposit box or a weather-proof box in your home.

2. Save PDF copies on a password protected USB drive. Make sure to store the USB drive somewhere safe, like a safety deposit box.

3. Save PDF copies in cloud storage, such as Dropbox or Google Docs.

What documents should you save?

Copies of the following documents: insurance documents and contracts, bank statements, credit card bills, family records (birth, marriage and death certificates), photocopies of credit and identification cards and all of your tax documents. You should also take inventory annually of your home (and business) by taking pictures of your items.

Should a weather disaster occur, your loss can be claimed on your tax return, but you need to know the value of what was lost. So when you’re taking time to put together your emergency kit, remember to also put together your financial kit!
